About the City of Lakeland

Lakeland was first settled in the 1870s and began to develop as the rail lines reached the area in 1884. It was incorporated 1 January 1885. The town was founded by Abraham Munn (a resident of Louisville, Kentucky), who purchased 80 acres (320,000 m2) of land in what is now downtown Lakeland in 1882 and platted the land for the town in 1884. Among the names considered (and rejected) for the town by its residents were Munnville, Red Bug, and Rome City.

Lakeland is 141 ft (43 m) above mean sea level. According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 67 sq mi (173.5 km2); 45.84 sq mi (118.7 km2) of it is land and 5.61 sq mi (14.5 km2) (10.90%) is covered by water. Lakeland is located within the Central Florida Highlands area of the Atlantic coastal plain, with a terrain consisting of flatland interspersed with gently rolling hills.
Lakeland, like most other parts of Florida north of Lake Okeechobee, is located in the humid subtropical zone (Köppen climate classification:Cfa). Typically, summers are hot and humid with high temperatures seldom dropping below 90 °F and 70 °F for the overnight low. Like most of Central Florida, afternoon thunderstorms are the norm throughout the summer. The winters are drier and mild, although rare cold snaps drop temperatures below freezing.

Conveniently located along I-4 between Tampa and Orlando, Lakeland is home to Florida Southern College, which hosts the largest on-site collection of Frank Lloyd Wright architecture. History buffs and art lovers will enjoy the Polk Museum of Art, and flight enthusiasts can't miss the annual SUN 'n FUN Fly-in. In the heart of downtown, Lake Mirror Park offers a historic promenade, amphitheater and pedestrian walkways. Hollis Garden, found around the walkway, is a breathtaking formal garden that showcases more than 10,000 flowers and Florida indigenous plants. History comes alive in Lakeland's legendary downtown Historic and Antiques district. Come visit the antiques dealers, specialty shops, art galleries, museums, restaurants and pubs, right in the heart of downtown.

Dixieland Historic Neighborhood

The City of Lakeland has identified about 100 neighborhoods. Of those, we have 15 registered neighborhood associations. Today we will spotlight the Dixieland Historic Neighborhood. Designated as a U.S. historic district in 1994, Dixieland is on the east side of Lake Hunter, west of South Florida Avenue, and runs between Walnut and West Belvedere Streets. The City of Lakeland appreciates the involvement of this neighborhood and we will continue to support their improvement efforts.
